{"id":193342,"date":"2023-11-13T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-13T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/?p=193342"},"modified":"2023-11-14T09:18:43","modified_gmt":"2023-11-14T09:18:43","slug":"how-schools-with-the-poorest-intakes-boosted-progress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/how-schools-with-the-poorest-intakes-boosted-progress\/","title":{"rendered":"How schools with the poorest intakes boosted progress"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Schools with large numbers of poorer pupils say they have boosted progress scores by installing new leadership, tighter behaviour rules and reaching beyond the school gates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data consultant Ed Cadwallader looked at schools with above-average proportions of disadvantaged pupils in exam years to see which schools have improved the most since 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some schools, up to 74 per cent of pupils were disadvantaged. The national average is 27 per cent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top 10 schools include eight academies, one foundation school and a free school. So how did they do it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New management<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Several schools had new leadership pre-pandemic. Terry Conway became headteacher at Norham High School, in north Tyneside in September 2019 when the school was in a \u201creally rocky position\u201d with just 295 pupils.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignright is-type-wp-embed is-provider-schools-week wp-block-embed-schools-week\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"D5SRk9yH2XmFx6eqVhBloMwWsGQ3Kf7ndZPvJA1acriYCjL4EzgptbO\"><blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"YutAYvz9cU\"><a href=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/has-nick-gibb-won-the-education-battle\/\">Has Nick Gibb won the education battle?<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Has Nick Gibb won the education battle?&#8221; &#8212; Schools Week\" src=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/has-nick-gibb-won-the-education-battle\/embed\/#?secret=y43Le569Yt#?secret=YutAYvz9cU\" data-secret=\"YutAYvz9cU\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly three quarters of its exam cohort this year was disadvantaged \u2013 but its Progress score moved from -1.26 in 2019, to 0.38 in 2023. This is the largest jump among the 10 schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conway scrapped underperforming subjects such as GCSE physical education and design and technology. He added GCSE drama, which didn&#8217;t exist even at key stage 3, and increased the lesson time in maths, English and science.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom my appointment I made it clear what had to change and how it would change,\u201d he said. \u201cI had non-negotiables, but these were wrapped up in care and understanding. It has been a real team effort.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natasha Carman, principal of Moor End Academy in Kirklees, helped lift the school out of a \u201creally bad place\u201d of poor behaviour and high staff turnover in 2017-18. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, 44 per cent of its year 11s were disadvantaged, but Progress moved from -0.21 pre-pandemic to 0.77.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the curriculum &#8220;wasn\u2019t right for the vast majority of pupils&#8221;, with almost the whole cohort entered for the full English Baccalaureate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many pupils lacked specialist teaching in modern foreign languages in key stage 2, meaning their starting points were &#8220;variable&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just under a quarter entered <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/ebacc-dfe-plans-league-table-shake-up-to-incentivise-take-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"EBacc\">EBacc<\/a> last year, compared to an average of 39 per cent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citizenship is now a core part of the curriculum in key stage 3 and every child does GCSE history or geography.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"435\" src=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Natasha-Carman-inset-400px.jpg\" alt=\"Natasha Carman comments on progress 8\" class=\"wp-image-193218\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:200px;height:199px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Natasha-Carman-inset-400px.jpg 400w, https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Natasha-Carman-inset-400px-244x265.jpg 244w, https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Natasha-Carman-inset-400px-347x377.jpg 347w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Carman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt Tate took over in 2016 at Hartsdown Academy in Kent, where some children start the school with an average reading age of seven.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pupils in key stage 3 are now taught by two main teachers for 20 hours a week, one teaching literacy-based subjects and one teaching numeracy-based. In the remaining five hours they access the rest of the curriculum.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The schools Progress 8 has climbed from -1.45 to -0.4. The school has 68 per cent disadvantaged pupils.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Behaviour overhauls<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many schools also say new behaviour policies have improved classroom learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Halley Academy in south London brought in a centralised behaviour policy to become a \u201cwarm, strict school\u201d, with, said headteacher Ben Russell, \u201creal buy-in and support from students and parents&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about disruption free learning and creating a climate of excellence for all children, irrespective of their starting point.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moor End has a new planner-led system where if children receive eight \u201ccomments\u201d in a week for bad behaviour, it can lead to a day in seclusion and learning through live-stream lessons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carman said this &#8220;supports pupils in self-regulating their behaviour&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue Jones, the executive principal at Charles Read Academy in Lincolnshire said the \u201cbiggest thing\u201d was ensuring disruption-free learning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The school\u2019s Progress 8 score has risen from -0.43 to 0.6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Going beyond the school gates<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But Jones said because it was a non-selective school in a selective area, some pupils lacked confidence. \u201cIt\u2019s so important to build up their self-esteem that they are worthy and can do as well as others\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Schools Week<\/em> has widely reported how schools are stepping into a public services void, providing basic items for struggling families.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norham\u2019s Conway said it provided food technology ingredients free. The school\u2019s progress 8 score has risen from -0.93 to 0.02.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arkonline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Ark\">Ark<\/a> Greenwich Free School in south London provides free music lessons and Duke of Edinburgh places for children receiving pupil premium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are also prioritised for parents\u2019 evening as part of their &#8220;pupil premium first&#8221; strategy. The school\u2019s Progress rose from 0.18 to 1.11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rhys Spiers, its principal, said: &#8220;Our process isn&#8217;t rocket science, there&#8217;s no silver bullet here but it\u2019s delivered with precision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What we are seeing anecdotally is pupil premium [children] who are happy and confident and they&#8217;ve experienced a really broad and balanced
