And we are going to lose that push where all students are involved, all grades are important and there\u2019s much more of a wider perspective about pupil outcomes\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Progress 8 was introduced to move away from the previous 5 A*-C including English and maths, seen by many as a \u201ccliff-edge\u201d measure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In roundtable discussions with officials, Gosling had proposed using a three-year average of the most recent key stage 2 data as a baseline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said a cap could have been added for schools where their cohorts\u2019 demographics have changed overtime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Trusts look at own progress measure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>His trust will now look at whether this model could be used to measure progress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dan Moynihan, chief executive at Harris Federation, said the remaining \u201cabsolute\u201d measures will be \u201ctough for schools in disadvantaged circumstances\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One solution he pointed to was grouping schools by similar characteristics, as done under the London Challenge, as a \u201cpotentially fairer way\u201d to present results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harris will \u201cdo some experimenting\u201d with data to see if they can find its own progress measure, but \u201cthe problem is you can\u2019t benchmark it easily against a wider pool,\u201d Moynihan said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Dan-Moynihan-400px.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Moynihan, CEO of Harris Federation, comments on progress 8 hiatus\" class=\"wp-image-203049\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:200px;height:200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Dan-Moynihan-400px.jpg 400w, https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Dan-Moynihan-400px-244x244.jpg 244w, https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Dan-Moynihan-400px-147x147.jpg 147w, https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Dan-Moynihan-400px-54x54.jpg 54w, https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Dan-Moynihan-400px-347x347.jpg 347w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Moynihan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenshaw Learning Trust proposed four solutions, one of which schools in the trust may use to calculate progress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe Ambrose, school improvement leader, said the absence of such a measure \u201ccould make it increasingly challenging for schools to show how much they add to pupils\u2019 lives\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government added Ofsted will continue to consider a range of data provided in the inspection data summary report, including about the school\u2019s cohort. There is \u201cno single piece of data will determine the outcome of any Ofsted judgement\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Calls for wider review<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department for Education said it intends for Progress 8 to return in 2026-27, when it will again have key stage 2 test data \u2013 which acts as a baseline for progress scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this will likely be a decision for a new government. Labour has already pledged to \u201cupdate\u201d the progress measure to hold schools to account for at least one creative or vocational subject, with a wider curriculum and assessment review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several leading academy trust chief executives and sector leaders have said the hiatus should prompt a review of the measure, first introduced in 2016.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wayne Norrie, chief executive at Greenwood Academies Trust, said the sector and DfE should now \u201cwork together to see if there is a better and fairer way to measure\u201d progress and attainment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While John Barneby, Oasis chief executive, said there needs to be an \u201coverhaul of how school performance is measured and which successes we celebrate\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Middlehurst said going back to Progress 8 would be \u201ca missed opportunity to rethink performance tables\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rollett added: \u201cThese metrics need to be part of an intelligent and compassionate approach to accountability, and be carefully designed to avoid penalising schools for doing the best thing for their
