The top of a report card<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe evaluation areas are now: inclusion; curriculum and teaching; achievement; attendance and behaviour; personal development and well-being; and leadership and governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Safeguarding will be judged \u2018met\u2019 or \u2018not met\u2019, and there will be judgment areas for early years and post-16 provision too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite criticism, Ofsted will stick with five grades \u2013 but they have been renamed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\u2018Causing concern\u2019 has been changed to \u2018urgent improvement\u2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n \u2018Attention needed\u2019 to \u2018needs attention\u2019 <\/li>\n\n\n\n \u2018Secure\u2019 to \u2018expected standard\u2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n \u2018Strong\u2019 to \u2018strong standard\u2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n \u2018Exemplary\u2019 to \u2018exceptional\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\nRoutine Ofsted inspection roll-out delayed<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nToolkits definitions have also been \u201ctightened\u201d<\/strong> and each grade will include a \u201cnarrative explaining inspectors\u2019 justification,<\/strong>\u201d says Ofsted.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOfsted has also further delayed the return of routine inspections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inspections will return on November 10, but only for schools that have volunteered.<\/strong> Routine inspections will return no earlier than December 1 \u2013 and will be pushed back to the new year if there are enough schools volunteering for inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOfsted chief Sir Martyn Oliver said the reforms are \u201cthe biggest change in Ofsted\u2019s way of working\u201d in its 33-year history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the new framework \u201cwill be fairer but rigorous\u201d and help bring \u201cabsolute clarity to parents and to professionals\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI’m really pleased that this report card gives both, at a glance, a summary, and then \u2026narrative and detail and next steps in areas of improvement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ofsted says the implementation and impact of the reforms will be tested “through a continual programme of evaluation which will include “an externally commissioned review of the operation of the renewed framework”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Damning\u2019 wellbeing report \u2018ignored\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nHowever, the changes have not allayed unions\u2019 concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ofsted also today published the findings of an independent wellbeing impact assessment of its new report cards, led by Sin\u00e9ad Mc Brearty, CEO of mental health and wellbeing charity Education Support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Staff wellbeing is key to the Ofsted reforms \u2013 which were triggered by the death of headteacher Ruth Perry.<\/p>\n\n\n\nRuth Perry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nBut the report found the new report cards will increase stress and workload for school staff, despite the sector already being among the top three \u201cindustries\u201d with high levels of work-related ill health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Paul Whiteman, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT, said the \u201cfrankly damning\u201d report shows new inspections \u201cdo not reduce pressure on leaders\u201d \u2013 repeating calls for the return of inspections to be delayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ofsted\u2019s plan to push ahead regardless \u201cspeaks of an inspectorate that has completely lost the trust of the profession, that has failed to properly listen to teachers and leaders\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\nPaul Whiteman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe watchdog said it has taken wellbeing concerns \u201cextremely seriously\u201d and nothing in its plans \u201cshould add to a provider\u2019s workload\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The inspectorate also said it is adding an extra inspector to visits<\/strong> \u2013 to free up more time for the lead inspector to \u201cfocus on engaging with leaders, coordinating their inspection team, and overseeing and quality assuring the inspection\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cThis means we can reduce pressure on leaders through the inspection process.\u201d The extra inspector \u201cshould ease any anxiety for leaders by acting as a regular point of contact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
