{"id":235078,"date":"2025-09-22T16:12:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T15:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/?p=235078"},"modified":"2025-09-22T16:12:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T15:12:10","slug":"childrens-minister-gets-beefed-up-schools-brief-as-portfolios-revealed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/childrens-minister-gets-beefed-up-schools-brief-as-portfolios-revealed\/","title":{"rendered":"Children&#8217;s minister gets beefed-up schools brief as portfolios revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New children\u2019s minister Josh MacAlister has been handed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/ministers\/parliamentary-under-secretary-of-state--257\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">beefed-up brief<\/a>, taking responsibility for safeguarding, counter-extremism in schools and maintenance of the education estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department for Education has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">updated its ministerial policy responsibilities<\/a> after the reshuffle saw new ministers for school standards, children and families and early education appointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MacAlister, a former teacher who led the last government\u2019s children\u2019s social care review, has picked up an expanded brief after taking on the children and families minister role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He will now oversee 17 policy areas, instead of the 13 that fell under previous children\u2019s minister Janet Daby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new additions include safeguarding, prevention of serious violence and counter-extremism in schools and the maintenance and environmental sustainability of the education estates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These responsibilities previously fell under the early education minister brief, held by Stephen Morgan, until he was replaced by Olivia Bailey. However the &#8220;online safety&#8221; responsibility is no longer listed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Policies moved between briefs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bailey\u2019s portfolio now includes best start family hubs and parenting, which have moved from the children\u2019s brief, while she also picks up school uniform \u2013 previously the schools minister&#8217;s responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also looks like a new responsibility has been added for the holiday activities and food (HAF) programme. The government <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/holiday-activities-programme-extended-for-another-3-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently extended the scheme\u2019s funding for another three years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it appears the &#8220;use of research, science and evidence within the Department for Education&#8221; responsibility has been ditched from the early year&#8217;s brief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phillipson\u2019s responsibilities remain unchanged, as do those of the only other remaining minister with responsibility for some schools issues \u2013 skills minister Jacqui Smith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is the full list of minister responsibilities, with any new briefs for the position in bold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bridget minister<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>school improvement, intervention and inspection (including links with <a
