{"id":238610,"date":"2025-11-27T11:05:29","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T11:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/?p=238610"},"modified":"2025-11-27T11:05:30","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T11:05:30","slug":"eyfs-rise-in-school-ready-pupils-but-government-way-off-target","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/eyfs-rise-in-school-ready-pupils-but-government-way-off-target\/","title":{"rendered":"EYFS: Rise in &#8216;school ready&#8217; pupils &#8211; but government way off target"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The proportion of reception pupils achieving a \u201cgood level\u201d of development has risen slightly this year, but the rate of improvement will need to increase considerably for government to hit its &#8220;school ready&#8221; target. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last <a href=\"https:\/\/explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk\/find-statistics\/early-years-foundation-stage-profile-results\/2024-25#dataBlock-ee152413-1cf2-43a3-8e29-b8221b73bbe3-tables\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"academic year,\">academic year,<\/a> 68.3 per cent of pupils hit this marker in the Early Years Foundation Stage profile assessments, results published this morning show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is up 0.6 percentage points from 2023-24 and 3.1 percentage points from 2021-22.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Labour set out its &#8220;school ready&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolsweek.co.uk\/starmer-wants-75-of-children-school-ready-by-2028\/\" title=\"\">pledge for three-quarters of five year olds to achieve a good level of development by 2028<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The measure assesses children\u2019s progress across areas such as language, personal, social and emotional development and maths and literacy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the highest it has ever been is 71.8 per cent, and that was under an old assessment system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Labour to meet its 75 per cent target, the average rise each year would have to equate to 1.7 percentage points &#8211; compared to this year&#8217;s rise of just 0.6 percentage points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the disadvantage gap has also widened again.
