data released yesterday (Thursday)<\/a> shows that between April 2024 and April 2025, more than 800 inspected settings used the function, and requested their inspections be either paused or deferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThis includes inspections at state schools, as well as non-association independent schools, area SEND and initial teacher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of the 786 settings that requested a deferral, 79 per cent (621) were accepted, while all 37 requests for a pause were accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ofsted carried out a total of 8,030 inspections over the same period, around two-thirds (64 per cent) of which were inspections of state schools. The deferrals equated to around one in 12 of these visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Schools Week asked Ofsted how many of the deferrals related directly to schools, but the watchdog said it could not provide this breakdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
‘Exceptional circumstances’<\/h3>\n\n\n\n Schools may request an inspection is deferred if it has not yet begun, or that it is paused, if it has already started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ofsted guidance says this will only be permitted in \u201cexceptional circumstances\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It lays out examples, which include where a senior leader\u2019s wellbeing \u201cwould be severely impacted\u201d and there is no other senior leader to step in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other examples include major incidents, such as the death of a child, closure due to a staff training day or weather, or if a school has recently converted to an academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new data does not detail the reasons deferrals and pauses were requested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A recent freedom of Information investigation by Schools Week<\/em> revealed that as of January 2025, there had been 44 pauses of school inspections to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOfsted declined to specify the reasons given, but following an internal review explained \u201ca number of deferrals\u201d had been granted where schools had closed due to \u201cadverse weather events or issues with the premises\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reasons also included combinations of \u201cmedical procedures, illnesses, mental health, death and bereavement; the impact of serious crime, resignation and suspension of staff\u201d, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pepe Di\u2019Iasio, general secretary of leaders\u2019 union ASCL, said: \u201cHeadteachers only ever request a pause or deferral to an inspection in extreme circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\nPepe Di’Iasio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\u201cIt\u2019s obviously important that inspectors view schools as they would normally operate, and that school leaders have a fair opportunity to demonstrate the work that they do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Deferrals and pauses are necessary mechanisms in this regard, and we would hope Ofsted treats these requests sensitively and supportively wherever possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An Ofsted spokesperson said: \u201cOur deferral and pausing policies are there to support school leaders when exceptional circumstances mean an inspection cannot go ahead, or it needs to be paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe encourage schools to use this policy as they need to, in line with our guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inspections deemed ‘incomplete’<\/h3>\n\n\n\n This week\u2019s Ofsted data also shows 61 school inspections were deemed \u201cincomplete\u201d, while additional evidence was gathered, in the 12 months up to April 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This includes inspections deemed \u201cincomplete\u201d through quality assurance or complaints processes, as well inspections paused for more than five days, and those suspended under the \u201csuspend and return policy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The policy was introduced in September 2024, and lets inspectors pause an inspection to allow a school to resolve safeguarding \u201cwhere that is the only issue in the school\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The data shows 18 state schools\u2019 overall grades were changed following quality assurance processes in the five months between April and September 2024, when overall grades were abolished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
