Few details were published at the time, but the government has fleshed out its vision for the schemes<\/a>.<\/p>\n The Department for Education announced the schemes will launch in September, with mission coastal focusing on Hastings and Scarborough.<\/p>\n The \u201cstark\u201d data \u201cdriving these decisions\u201d show the north east \u201chas the lowest exam results of any region in England at 1.9 points below the national average of 46 in attainment 8\u201d.<\/p>\n In Hastings, disadvantaged children \u201caverage just 26 and in Scarborough around 27\u201d.<\/p>\n “Expert practitioners\u201d will work directly with schools to build teacher capacity and boost standards. No information was provided on who these practitioners are. Schools will also work together in local clusters.<\/p>\n They will be expected to forge \u201cnew partnerships with employers, sports clubs, faith groups and youth organisations will provide vital mentoring, careers support and cultural enrichment\u201d as well.<\/p>\n Education secretary Bridget Phillipson said: \u201cFor too long, children living in these areas have grown up without the opportunities that they need and deserve to be able to achieve and thrive.<\/p>\n \u201cThat is not a matter of ability. It is a matter of justice. Mission north east and mission coastal are our commitment to change that postcode lottery for good.<\/p>\n \u201cI grew up in the north east and know the challenges families face.<\/p>\n \u201cI want every child there, and in coastal communities like Hastings and Scarborough, to have the same opportunities I was lucky enough to have.\u201d<\/p>\n The government stated the missions will also change the \u201cgenerational injustice\u201d that has seen white working-class children \u201cscoring 30.9 against 48.6 for their better-off peers\u201d at attainment 8.<\/p>\n The missions have been designed \u201cwith a test, learn and grow approach\u201d, DfE added.<\/p>\n This means the \u201cprogrammes will identify what works quickly and feed those lessons back into national policy\u201d.<\/p>\n And over time officials will “look to form a wider alliance of other coastal areas with similar challenges” that could “benefit from the approach being taken in Scarborough and Hastings”.<\/p>\n The department has said the missions will seek to build on the\u00a0\u201crevolutionary impact\u201d of the London Challenge<\/a>, the Blair government\u2019s school improvement programme in the capital.<\/p>\n At its peak, the initiative had an annual budget \u00a340 million.<\/p>\nNew school partnerships<\/h2>\n
